How a Nikon Joined a Canon PhotoSkwela

On my last post, I did mention that I wanted to join the Canon PhotoSkwela held at the SM Event Center on September 14 and 15 mainly because they had my self-proclaimed mentor Jay Tablante as one of the speakers. As a Nikon user myself, I wasn't even sure if they'd let me in but I was adamant about going and probably just take a couple of shots from outside the perimeter. So come day two of the event (wasn't able to join during the first one because of work), I took my 80-200 with me and prepared to be sniping from the sidelines.

When I got to the event there were a lot less people than what I expected it to be. Of what I've heard, the place from the other day's workshop was fully packed considering it was because of the genre our speaker were discussing which was Cosplay Photographer. Today, Jay is supposed to discuss Advertising Photography, apparently a topic lot less interesting I guess for most of the non-professional  audience.

So there I was looking at empty seats and I thought why not sneak in. I haven't taken out my camera yet so no one knows I was there with a yellow brand. So I conjured up my inner Neal Caffrey and approached the beautiful usherette first. Her name was Bien according to her tag and I asked if I could sign up for the workshop even if I didn't have my camera with me (liar liar pants on fire). Bien with her killer smile said, "It's okay sir. Just tell the receptionist that you left  your camera at home just tell them what model it is". At the back of my mind I was shouting. "This is awesome!"

Now Bien escorted me to the receptionist table and said my thank yous to her. The pretty Canon girl behind the table asked for my name and wrote it down on a name tag she then gave me. She then asked me what model my Canon camera was and right off the bat I told her I had a 70D (I didn't even know for sure if there was a Canon 70D). Things were going pretty much according to plan and I was feeling really confident about getting in until the other Canon girl behind the table asked me what the serial number of my Canon camera was. Dang! I thought I was done there for sure but with some quick thinking and a hint of that debonair smile I told her luckily I save everything in my phone. Then I whipped out my phone and pretended to scroll down my notes and then wrote down some numbers. Little did they know that I was only copying the numbers right on top of my name changing some of the digits. That's what I call brilliant.

Now, with my name tag on and the confidence of having pulled a simple con I walked around the event center and personally met with the speakers, Canon Ambassador, Phottix Master, and Cosplay Photographer Jay Tablante and Canon Ambassador and renowned Fashion/Portrait Photographer Wesley Villarica and we were able to talk a bit about the business and how they started out and if they had some trade secrets they would want to share. I eventually ended up telling them both that I was a Nikon user and that I conned my way inside the event, they just laughed at it and even admired my tenacity of pulling off something like that. Both of them guys are awesome and my respect goes to both of them.

And so my time during the event went off better than I had planned for. I was able to get myself a lot of freebies during the event just by asking questions. I got a Canon EOS baseball cap which I'm planning to use on one of my shoots, a Tamrac Neoprene Camera Sling, and signed copy of Jay Tablante's photobook Geekology. My personal thanks to the speakers themselves for being such great sports and most specially to Canon for not suing me for trespassing. Hope to see you on the next workshop!

Here are some of the photos I took during the event and because I couldn't whip out my big ass D7000 and 80-200 and sticking out like a sore thumb, I had to make use of my fiancee's Nikon Coolpix point-and-shoot.

Here's the Canon ImageNation ID tag they gave me. I wore this the entire time with the Nikon Coolpix in my hand.

Photo Summit Asia 2013

Even though I wasn't able to properly register during the event that happened last September 5-8 at the Ayala Center Cebu, I had the chance to drop by, join a couple of workshops, meet some good people, and most of all take some awesome photos!

The event was a lot of fun and I had a blast just looking around the booths. I bought a 77mm Phottix UV filter for my Nikkor 80-200 and got myself a free workshop DVD by top cosplay photographer and my self-proclaimed mentor Jay Tablante. And while waiting for next year's summit, I'm looking forward to this week's Canon Photoskwela with Canon Crusaders of Light Wesley Villarica and Jay Tablante. Now, if only I can get myself a Canon. Wanna lend me yours?

The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling! PART II

I've given much thought if I should write this and I've decided 'what the hell'. The storm has passed and the worse is now behind us. Pablo left the city with zero casualties and everyone is in jubilee. Social media postings of warnings, prayers, and concerns of people mostly in panic mode have turned into thank yous and personal attacks to the skeptical few as they silently sneer "I told you so".

I do not deny nor disapproved of the power of the social media during times of calamities, on the contrary I acknowledge how influential Facebook,  and Twitter can be to the people reading them. So much so that a single post can either help a situation or cause unnecessary panic. We have seen this phenomenon before with the TV/Radio media. But now, with the internet and its reach, that phenomenon is amplified to a greater and faster extent.

With what happened to the city less than a year ago after Sendong almost leaving it in ruins, news of a much stronger typhoon immediately turned everyone's panic button on. And who can really blame them? No one wants to go through that pain and tragedy again. So with the intention of being a good public servant, people started to post storm warnings almost every hour. Pictures of Pablo showing how it covered the entire island started to flood (pun intended) everyone's page and hashtags such as #Bopha, #Pablo, and #PrayCDO among a few began to trend0.

I get it, believe me I do. These people were just trying to do what they can to get the word out and warn the others of the coming disaster. But as what Uncle Ben said - "With great power, comes great responsibilities" - and with the power of the social media at your hands, your 'warnings' and 'concerns' especially if shared a hundred times can cause mass hysteria which in this case led to a supermarket out-of-stock and a house full of canned goods, candles and flashlights enough to start a small sari-sari store.

I'm glad that the city won this fight over nature with zero casualties thanks to the combined efforts of the local government and the people as well as those who have flooded my wall with warnings (every freaking minute of every freaking hour.) It's always better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best, but then again the next time you see a single warning already posted in Facebook then most probably everyone of your friends have already seen it too. Re-posting it and sharing it a hundred times will not make you a better public servant nor will it make you famous, it's just plain annoying. But if you really can't help yourself, then just send it through a private message to those people you actually care about (or to those who at least give a damn).

The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling!

So there's supposedly -- lemme rephrase that -- there IS a storm coming and it will hit the city tomorrow December 4, 2012. And with the city's traumatic encounter with Sendong, the people have become all kinds of crazies. Most of them have started evacuating and hoarding for the forecast week-long calamity while a few remained cynical shrugging everything as an overreaction.

The city has been on high alert since yesterday. Large billboards have been brought down and the city government has already deployed emergency units in key parts of the city in case the worse comes to worst. Supermarkets are running out of candles, canned goods, flashlights, and first aid kits. Safe to say, everyone is on panic mode.

I got to say, it's gonna be really something if this will all end up as a Chicken Little case but I really can't blame all these people to prepare for the worse especially with what they went through with the last super typhoon that swept the city. Hopefully though, I really wish this is all just an overreaction.

Stay safe CDO.

MAGS turns Eight!

It took a while for me to post an update (took me 3 days to go through all the raw files) but congratulations to MAGS on its 8th anniversary! The event was a success despite the lack of pit for photographers. The clothes were beautiful and the models were even better. Though a lot of guests were disappointed when Christine Reyes didn't grace the runway along with the other models but it was all good and fun. I had my doubts using the 70-300 VR during the event but thankfully my gears came through for me. I guess it's true what they say - it's not the gear, its the photographer. haha.  Seriously, got to upgrade to a faster lens. Again, thanks to MAGS and the CDO Photowalkers League for the invite! Until next year!

Poetic License to Kill (for the lack of a sensible title)

I recently enrolled myself in an English Proficiency review class for an exam needed in my visa application. This is my second English proficiency class since I graduated from the academe; the first one being my training class on my previous job. However, I'm still amazed how much I have forgotten the rules on basic English.

The Ugly Guy's Guide to Baking

I guess this is a sequel to my highly infamous post "The Ugly Guy's Guide on Getting Girls" that almost made the headlines. So, supposing you already have a nice girl with you and you want to keep her around for a little much longer. And we all know that nothing impresses the ladies more than a guy who knows his way in the kitchen. But sad to say we can't all be chefs and bakers. So here's a little something you can cook up for that special someone and it'll only take you less than 10 minutes to prepare.

The Parable of the Visa

Once upon a time from a far away land south of the Philippines there were two friends, Pedro and Juan, who  dreamed of the American dream. Unfortunately, luck it seems had eluded the two men and application after application they had been denied of a visa.

Why Not Give the Cybercrime Act a Chance?

A trending topic circulating around Juan's cyberspace lately is the implementation of the Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. Facebook alone is flooded by status messages voicing out their concerns and people 'black'-ing out their profile pictures as a sign of protest against the said act. It makes me wonder how many of these netizens have actually read the entire act before joining the protest band wagon. Wipe that silly grin off your face and read it HERE.

A Real-Life Analysis of the Rurouni Kenshin Sword Techniques

Since the Rorouni Kenshin (Samurai X) live action movie is almost here, here's something that might perk your interest more.

According to Lawrence Eng Ph.D., a social scientist and Otaku studies scholar (and martial artist), the sword techniques portrayed in the anime had strong realistic elements, pushed beyond their normal limits and taken to their extreme. After exploring some of the techniques of Rurouni Kenshin, Dr. Eng made an analysis on their real world fighting applicability.

Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu
Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu, practiced by both Himura Kenshin and Hiko Seijuro, is a full-featured style with many techniques to accommodate many different fighting situations.

Ryu Tsui Sen
Being a downwards slash from the air, this technique is not very practical since most normal human beings can't jump as high as Kenshin can. It might be useful, however, if you are already higher than your opponent and are jumping down to attack.

Ryu Tsui Sen - Zan
This technique is similar to Ryu Tsui Sen, but performed by thrusting the sword downwards instead of slashing with it. It suffers the same flaw as the former technique: you're not usually going to be that much higher than your opponent.

Hi Ryu Sen
This is a surprise attack where you thrust your sword out of its scabbard and hit your unsuspecting opponent with the butt end of the sword. I could actually see this technique working in real life. Note the limitations of the technique, however. You have to be very close to your opponent for the technique to be reliable. Also, if you miss, there's the possibility that you'll lose your sword. Disarming oneself before a sword duel is not a good idea.

Ryu Kan Sen
The aspect of this technique where one sidesteps a thrusting attack and attacks the opponent's weak side is technically very sound, and is a common principle across many martial arts. The main problem I see with Ryu Kan Sen, however, is that it is often performed with a spin. After Kenshin sidesteps the oncoming attack, he spins 180 degrees and slashes at the end of the spin. Generally, spin moves are dangerous because they expose your back to your opponent and it takes longer for your attack to reach the target. Only if your opponent has committed heavily to his attack, like a strongly forward-moving thrust (gatotsu, anyone?), would it be even vaguely safe to spin. In my opinion, it would generally be better to sidestep the attack, and slash without spinning. Keep your enemy in front of you at all times and make your attack as quickly as possible. Kenshin probably got away with the spin technique because of his godlike speed.

Ryu Kan Sen - Tsumuji
I'm not positive I can visualize this technique in real life, since it requires one to move towards your opponent, twist around his attack, and then slash him when he's within range. I suppose the closest thing I can think of is to move under and slightly off to the side of the attack while it's coming towards you, and twist the body upwards while slashing upwards. The technique I just described seems fairly reasonable from my point of view. You're dodging the attack, the opponent is in front of you at all times, and you're not wasting any motion before slashing.

Ryu Sou Sen
This technique involves attacking all nine target points on your opponent's body in quick succession. While such a blitzkrieg attack could be attempted (and even successful) in real life, I don't think a normal human is fast enough to pull it off like Kenshin can.

Ryu Sou Sen - Garami
This technique attacks a single point over and over again in rapid succession. In real life, I suppose one could slash or thrust at the same spot of an opponent over and over again. However, you'd have to be really fast and ready to defend yourself if your opponent manages to defend your predictable barrage of attacks.

Ryu Shou Sen
This technique is to counterattack aerial attacks. Since aerial attacks probably aren't forthcoming, this technique might not be very useful in real life.

Dou Ryu Sen
One cuts the ground with this technique and uses the force of the cut to throw up rocks and dirt at the opponent, distracting him as a setup for a more powerful technique. In real life, I suppose you could use your sword in much the same manner, but I get the feeling you might be cutting lines in the ground more so than throwing up dirt and rocks. Furthermore, I don't know if I'd want to risk damaging my blade by dragging it across and into the ground.

Sou Ryu Sen
Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu is most famous for its battou-jutsu (sword-drawing) techniques, and this is one of them. Sou Ryu Sen is a double attack battou-jutsu. The initial sword draw and slash is followed by a slash using the scabbard. It's a simple but seemingly effective and clever technique. I like it a lot.

Sou Ryu Sen - Ikazuchi
If I like Sou Ryu Sen, I like this variant even better. Instead of attacking with the sword first, you attack with the scabbard first, and then draw the sword and attack second. Just make sure you are able to draw your sword quickly and reliably after the first hit.

Kuzu Ryu Sen
Hiko Seijuro's coolest technique, Kuzu Ryu Sen involves striking all nine of your enemy's target points simultaneously. Unless you have the speed of a god, this technique is best left to the anime professionals.

Ama Kakeru Ryu no Hirameki
The succession technique of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu also happens to be a form of battou-jutsu. Like Sou Ryu Sen, it's simple yet remarkably clever and effective. In my opinion, Ama Kakeru Ryu no Hirameki (with its leading left foot) is technically very sound. I think there are two major reasons why it is special and deserving to be the succession technique of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu:

1. Surprise Factor
It easily makes sense that leading with the left foot results in a slightly faster attack on the draw, since the sword is closer to the opponent than if one led with the right foot. Beyond speed however, the technique has an element of surprise to it--most swordsmen do not perform a left foot-leading battou-jutsu. Why not?
In the anime, it's mentioned how leading with the left foot is dangerous because one might cut one's own leg on the upswing if the technique is performed improperly. This is true, but I think there's an even more important reason why opposing swordsmen don't expect the left foot to lead on the draw, and that's the fact that most sword-drawing techniques tend to be high-to-low, as opposed to low-to-high (like the Ama Kakeru Ryu no Hirameki). For high-to-low slashes, a right-handed swordsman would invariably lead with the right foot because the full follow-through of a high-to-low slash ends with the sword more on the left side of the body than the right side, so one wouldn't want the left leg in the way of the down swing. Since most swordsmen are used to encountering high-to-low slashes on the draw, they'd find it surprising that one would lead with the left foot.

2. Efficient Utilization of Body Mechanics
Leading with the left foot instead of the right completely changes the body mechanics of the technique (a low-to-high slash on the draw). The technique becomes much stronger. In boxing, for example, it would be the difference between a jab (attacking with the lead hand) and a cross (attacking with the rear hand), the cross being much stronger. Or from a baseball perspective, it'd be like a right handed pitcher pitching with his right foot forward versus pitching with his left foot forward. Punching or pitching with the hand opposite and rear of the leading foot is much more powerful because it allows for greater torque, with the whole weight of the body behind the movement. Notice that Kenshin's succession technique is not weak and jab-like. In fact, it's strong enough to lift his opponents into the air.

In addition, the motion of making a full step forward with the left foot is stronger than the motion of shuffling one's right foot forward. When Kenshin performed this technique against Aoshi, his left foot left cracks in the ground!

And very importantly, leading with the left foot makes the second part of the succession technique possible. With the right foot forward, one would have to spin a full 360 degrees in order to make the second slash. On the other hand, leading with the left foot, one only has to spin 180 degrees, which is much faster.

The Jinri Experience

Per definition, Gravure a printing process that uses an etched or engraved plate. How this got adapted and redefined to the Japanese language is unknown. In Japan, Gravure is considered a form of art whereby a pre-teen or teen female idol poses for clothed, semi-clothed, or nude pictures in various positions and costumes. The pictures are published in magazine form, featuring only this female model and no others.

And according to photographer Jay Tablante and I quote, "Sadly though, these girls (Gravure Idols) are usually Japanese, thus destroying the fantasy of the so-pretty-yet-so-normal girl who could be living right next door. For us, they have remained mere downloads, but they have never been familiar faces. Well, not until now."

The Jinri Experience is the country’s first ever gravure book, featuring arguably our best example of an emerging “idol”: radio DJ, model, FHM Philippines columnist, and cosplayer Jinri Park.

The Jinri Experience was launched last August 5 and now available in National Bookstore. Truly one experience you don't wanna miss!

How To Capture Motion at Concerts: A Tutorial by Jared Polin

Here's an awesome tip from Jared Polin on Capturing Motion at Concerts. Please press Play on the player and read along with Jared throughout the whole tutorial:

Capturing Motion at Concerts
One of the most important aspects to concert photography is being able to capture motion (freeze action). In this article, I will lay out the basic steps, which will allow you to better freeze motion when shooting a show. For the purposes of this article, I will assume that you will be shooting the show with a Digital SLR (single lens reflex, meaning what you see through the lens is what you will capture).

Camera Settings
The first thing to be sure of is that your camera is not set to a full automatic mode. Full auto is going to choose every setting for you and most likely not capture motion properly. The problem with full auto is that your settings will change on every picture. One picture may be shot at ISO 1600 where the next image may be shot at 200 because the light meter saw the stage lights and tricked the camera. The camera doesn't know what you are trying to capture, all it knows is that it is trying to give you the proper exposure. You are smarter than the camera, you know what you are trying to capture and that’s why it’s better to learn your manual settings (M,A,S Nikon M,AV,TV Canon).

File format setting
I always recommend that you set your camera to RAW. The RAW file format takes all of the “raw” data that the image sensor captures and sends it right to your memory card without making edits or compressing your file. This is important as the RAW file gives you more ability to tweak your final images exposure, contrast, vibrancy, clarity etc to create a better all around image. For example: if your captured image comes out underexposed (looks dark) but you captured the subject and motion the way you hoped, you can tweak the RAW file to change your exposure settings after the fact, offering you a better chance at a usable image. I call this “cheating the system”, where you deliberately underexpose the image knowing that you will be able to “bring it back” because of the raw file. I will further discuss the RAW vs. JPEG debate in future articles.

Camera Mode
I recommend that you set your camera to its Aperture Priority setting, allowing you to open your lens to the widest f-stop available. Aperture is directly linked to ISO and shutter speed. When you open up your lens’s aperture, or set it to a lower number like 2.8 or 4, you are letting more light in, allowing the camera to utilize a higher shutter speed. The higher the shutter speed, the easier it is to capture motion. For example, if your aperture is f4 and your shutter speed is 250th and you opened up to f2.8, your shutter speed would go to 500th (1 stop change) because it’s letting more light in. (Remember what I always say, it’s all about the glass. Invest in glass over bodies as good glass will stay with you from camera to camera to camera.)

ISO
The ISO is your film speed, and is determined based on how much light is available in your shooting environment. ISO settings will directly affect your shutter speed and aperture settings. The rule of thumb is that as your ISO goes higher, your shutter speed will follow. For example, if you start with an ISO of 1600 and a shutter speed set at 250th and increased your ISO to 3200, your shutter speed would go to 500th (1 stop change). In most concert situations you are faced with dimly lit stages and rooms, therefore you should set your ISO between 1600-6400 depending on your camera. The reason you selected a higher ISO right off the bat is because you know you are in a darker environment. You also know that a higher ISO will allow you to have a faster shutter speed thus allowing you a better chance of capturing motion. (Higher ISO could also lead to a more grainy image which I will discuss in future articles.

Metering
Many of today’s cameras allow you to choose from 3-dimensional meeting to spot metering. 3D metering will survey the entire frame to get an average light reading helping you to determine the proper aperture and shutter speed. 3D is great for everyday general shooting to get you an initial setting. Spot metering uses the center portion of the frame only. This means that a smaller portion of the frame will be used for metering. Usually this will be done inside a very small circle inside the viewfinder. This is a great setting to use when trying to shoot a subject who may be backlight or surrounded by lights that may through off your meter. This setting will give you a reading of exactly what you are trying to meter with less chance of the meter being tricked. As you start to understand light better you will see that all of these meter settings will give you a close reading but with your personal tweaks you will get an even better one. If you are using a wide-angle lens and 3D metering, it is possible that stage lights will give you a false meter reading as the meter is most likely reading the bright lights. An indication of this might be your main subject coming out too dark, since the camera is metering for the bright lights. Switching to spot metering will allow you to meter for just your subject, giving you a better chance of getting a correct reading. Conversely, when you use a telephoto lens, you are gathering light from a smaller area, so either spot metering or 3D metering should work.

Focus Settings
I recommend two different focus settings, depending on certain parameters: continuous or single focus. Continuous focusing is best if the subject is moving around the stage a lot, as this will allow the focus to track the subject. If the subject does not move around a lot, I would use single focus, as it allows you to better lock on to the subject.

Shutter Speed Settings
If you’ve manually set your ISO and aperture (aperture priority), your shutter speed will be set automatically, however you’ll still have to pay attention to where it’s set. There are a few rules tied with shutter speed. One is that your shutter speed should be higher than the focal length of your lens. For example, if your lens is zoomed to 300mm your shutter speed should not drop below 1/320th of a second. If you are using a 50mm your shutter speed should not drop below 1/60th of a second. The reason your shutter speeds have to stay higher than your focal length is because small movements can cause your images to blur as light travels to the image sensor.

There however is a way to cheat the system. If you do not have enough light and your subject is moving quickly, you can underexpose your image. Underexposing an image means that you are not leaving the shutter open long enough based on the lighting situation you are in. This is represented by an image that may look to dark. For example, you are faced with a dimly light stage and a fast moving artist. Your shutter speed says 1/125th and your images are coming out with some motion blur. You are already set to 2.8 and you have maxed out your ISO. What you can do is change your shutter speed to 1/250th or 1/320th which will underexpose the picture but it will also freeze the motion. Being that you are shooting RAW you will be able to bring the image back to a usable image in post processing.

Ultimately, a lot depends on the type of artists you are photographing. If you have an artist who does not move around too much, you can get away with a slower shutter speed in the 1/60th of a second to 1/125th of a second range to freeze the motion. If you are photographing a fast moving subject, you will want to use a lens that allows you to keep your shutter speeds at 1/250th or higher. The faster the shutter speed, the easier it will be to freeze the motion.

Tips
Here are a few tips for setting a faster shutter speed if you see that your images are coming out blurry:
  • Setting your ISO higher will bump your shutter speed higher, allowing you a better chance of capturing motion.
  • Lowering your aperture (using a smaller number) will let more light in, speeding up your shutter.
  • Setting your ISO higher AND lowering your aperture will get you an even faster shutter speed.
  • Underexposing your image to give you a faster shutter speed will help you freeze action. (You will have to bring the image back in post processing of the RAW file).
Hopefully, this guide will provide you with the basic steps needed to help you capture motion. It is going to take a lot of practice to get a feel for what your camera settings should be. Over time, you will start to see how a change in one setting will affect another setting, and you will become more adept at capturing motion in the future. (Taken from www.froknowsphoto.com)

Man of Steel Official Trailer

Warner Bros finally released the trailer for the new Superman movie. And being an avid Superman fan myself, I just can't help but question a few details in the trailer. First, why is Clark Kent bearded? And second, why is there a marina and a fishing boat in Smallville? Or is that in Metropolis? I know Christopher Nolan wants this to be as realistic as possible (same as what he did with the Dark Knight Trilogy) but how realistic can you really go with a super-powered flying alien?

CJ: The Walk Out Show

Chief Justice Renato Corona walked out from the impeachment court after finishing his statement before the tribunal without waiting to be properly discharged from the witness stand. With ass and nose puffing smoke, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, ordered to close all entry and exit points of the Senate to prevent Corona from leaving. Threatened that the impeachment court will render a decision without him, Corona returned to the tribunal in a wheelchair. His blood pressure supposedly spiked up and his blood sugar level crashed down -- reason why Corona walked out in the first place.

Why does this feel like a common case of deja vu?

Plunging with plunder charges, Former President Erap Estrada was detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center for three years due to 'declining health'. After being pardoned, he is now running for Manila City Mayor.

Another former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo after being bombarded with corruption cases, immediately claims she is suffering from a bone disease. She is seen here, also wheelchair-bound, banned from leaving the country due to the cases filed against her.

And now this, Chief Justice Renato Corona in a wheelchair due to hypoglycemia and hypertension being escorted back to the impeachment tribunal.

Its common knowledge that Filipinos are sympathetic but do they really take us for stupid as well?

Why Jessica Sanchez Will Never Be The Next American Idol

Emotional: Jessica was tearful after pouring her heart into And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going Filipino-Mexican Jessica Sanchez is currently one of the top 4 contestants in America's most popular singing competition American Idol. Being the second Filipino to have reached this level in the competition (next to Jasmine Trias who was the third place finalist on the third season), Jessica has created a hype even greater than that of Trias as she actually has a real chance of winning the contest.
When the judges saved Sanchez from the elimination moving her up to the top 4, it was evident that they truly recognized her talent and potential as an artist. And after giving her a standing ovation for her performance of 'And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going', Sanchez sealed herself as one of the American Idol favorites.
But sadly, the American Idol competition is more than a singing and talent contest. For the most part, it is a popularity contest among others (thus most of the weight of the eliminations comes from the viewer's votes). This is why Sanchez, even with her undeniable talent, can never be the next American Idol even when it's is true that every Filipino (including the half-Filipino, 1/4-Filipino, 1/8-Filipino, has a Filipino ancestor, and have dated a Filipino from the internet) from the DHs to the immigrants are supporting Sanchez by flooding Fox with votes.
But consider this, even when it seems that we are slowly invading the US, the Filipino community is only .8% of the country's total population. Now, since we are Pinoy and its (ab)normal for us to own 2 or more phones, let me stretch this a little bit more. Allow me to include all the other Asian minorities and the Hispanic community in the US (since Sanchez if half Mexican) that comprise 15% of the total population. With an approximate total of 20% of the US population voting for Sanchez, the other 80% can still crush her like a bug in a windshield. And this is even a long stretch.
It is without question that Sanchez has what it takes to be on top, but we have already witnessed that being the next American Idol is more than being the best singer in the group. Season 8's Adam Lambert was obviously a better performer than season winner Kris Allen but because he confessed that he was gay he ended up in 2nd place. I guess a lot of girl voters got disappointed with this revelation and decided to ogle at Allen instead. This might be true, since season 2 winner Ruben Studdard beat Clay Aiken by a small margin considering that Aiken supposedly led the fan voting from the wildcard week onward until the finale. I supposed during the finals Aiken's girl fans realized he was to gay to be true. And true enough, he admitted he was.
Please don't get me wrong though, I am not pointing this out to belittle our gay brothers and sisters. I just wanted to allude that wherever you go, may it be here in the Philippines, or much more in the US, there will always be the issue of minorities and discriminations. It's always easy for us to say 'why not?' but do you really think with all honesty that America is ready for an Asian American Idol?
As a Filipino I understand our fixation in claiming all that is Pinoy no matter how minute the relation is. Maybe it has something to do with our inferiority complex as a people or our colonial mentality (blame the Spaniards -- by the way why aren't they called like that anymore?) no one really knows. Being a third world country we try to live vicariously through the success of our "kababayan" who have made it big in the world. That is why we love Nicole Scherzinger, Tia Carrere, and Lou Diamond Philips since they all have Filipino blood. This fascination often mistaken/cloaked as national pride leads me to speculate that if Bin Laden had pinoy blood we would have taken credit for that too. Noticed how we whispered our I LOVE YOUs to Reomel Ramores and Onel de Guzman
But wait, let me go back to my point, I am a Filipino and Jessica Sanchez has all my support but until the world can see beyond the color of a skin, I really don't think that she will be the next American Idol.
But then again, I almost failed college statistics so my math could be flawed and maybe Jessica Sanchez can still win this thing. If so, then we will have yet another celebrity to brag about as a nation. And probably we can ask Jessica to lullaby China and have Manny and Lou Diamond kill them in their sleep. And that's how to end the Scarborough dispute. Just a thought.
