How To Put Album Covers In Your iPod Songs

People who have seen my iPod playlist often ask me how I put album covers in all my songs. For those are not so familiar with album covers, here's how your playlist looks like with you have none:

or when your playing a song, your screen looks like this:

However, when you have album covers, it'll look like these:

Cool isn't it?

There are a lot of ways on how to do this, and I'm sure there are already a lot of tutorial about this out there. But, for those who want to do it like I do, read up.

The most common way of putting album covers on your iPod song is through iTunes. Open iTunes, right click on a song title and click on where it says "Get Album Artwork". This allows iTunes to connect to the internet and look for the album cover throughout the web.

However, this doesn't usually work all the time. I think this process only works with the songs you have purchased through the Apple Store (which I presume is not where most of us get our truckloads of songs).

So here's another way of putting album covers in your songs and this is actually the one that I use most of the time - MP3TAG.

"Mp3tag is a powerful and yet easy-to-use tool to edit metadata of common audio formats where it supports ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, iTunes MP4, WMA, Vorbis Comments and APE Tags.

It can rename files based on the tag information, replace characters or words in tags and filenames, import/export tag information, create playlists and more.

Mp3tag supports online database lookups from, e.g., Amazon, discogs, or freedb, allowing you to automatically gather proper tags and cover art for your music library...."

This program is pretty amazing, but the downside is that if the song you've chosen isn't in any of the online music stores (Amazon, discogs, etc.) you probably won't find a match. This might happen to cover songs or songs which aren't that familiar or weren't released in the international market (Pinoy songs, etc).

Here's how you can work around that problem. What you need are Google and iTunes again). First, Google the album cover of the song that you have chosen. Save the album cover in your computer. Make sure that the size of picture is around 300X300 px to 500X500 px in order to get a good quality image on your iPod. Next, open iTunes. Right click on the song that you want and choose "Get Info" to open a second window showing the details about the song. Click on the tab that says "Artwork". And finally, simply drag the album cover that you have saved to the box on the "Artwork" tab and press OK.

How simple is that right? Another cool thing about this is you can actually use any picture that you want for your iPod song. Here's an example of a cover song I recorded from Youtube. It's from AJ Rafael - a US-based Filipino singer. MP3Tag couldn't find a match on his album cover so I Googled it and voila!

I hope this little tutorial helps on putting some well-deserved punk on your iPhone's music selection. For questions, violent reactions, or completely senseless comments, hit the comments section below.
