KAONA Grill Mandaue: a review

So here it is, my first attempt for a food review. Please be gentle, i might bleed ;)

So DeNelicious got this discount coupon online offering us 50% off for every P500 order at this restaurant in Mandaue City called KAONA Grill. So last weekend we decided to give it a try and here's the low down on our experience with KAONA Grill:

LOCATION

The restaurant is situated at the corner of A.S. Fortuna St. and H. Cortes St. in Mandaue City. It's the corner lot so you're not gonna miss it.

PLACE AND AMBIANCE

The first thing to note about the place is that it has a parking lot. So anyone who has a car, a batmobile, or a tank can visit the place. The look of the restaurant itself is reminiscent of the old backyard in my uncle's house in the province where we would enjoy a delightful meal of "sinugbang isda" (Grilled Fish) and my favorite "tinolang manok bisaya" (Native Chicken Ginger Stew). The design is on the native side, however the furnishings could use a bit of improvement because the tables and chairs look like they have been flood-washed.

SERVICE

The personnel were friendly and very accommodating. Even when we weren't able to call for a reservation (you had to make one if you're gonna be using a discount coupon), they still happily honored our deal. The restaurant does not have menu card, so you have to order at the counter where their menu is displayed. The attendant/cashier was very friendly upon taking our orders. Waiters stood nearby in case you'd need anything else.

FOOD and PRICE

Now finally here it is -- the food. KAONA Grill offers a variety of menu basically consisting of grilled fish, meat, and vegetables. The menu display on the counter does not have any pictures or serving info, so you have to ask the cashier about it. The prices are fairly cheap and affordable ranging from P150 to P450. We ordered the "calamares" (calamari), "sizzling pork sisig" (marinated, boiled, grilled and fried pig face), and grilled tuna belly. And for our orders, here are my thoughts, scaled from 1 to 10 with 10 as the highest:

  • Food Presentation: 0 to 2. I had the slab of grilled tuna belly on a banana-leaf covered plate; no garnish whatsoever. The same goes for the calamares and sisig. However, the sisig was served in a hot plate so at least that counts for something.

  • Food Taste: 5 to 6. The food and its flavors weren't that memorable. Honestly, we'd tasted better. The calamares was too dry and flour-y for my taste and I think the sisig being sold on a cart outside my office tastes better than the slices served on the hot plate. But in fairness, the grilled tuna belly was good. I guess their specialty really are on grilled foods. The pineapple juice/smoothie was decent as well.

  • Food Serving: 6 to 7. Most of the orders are good for two servings however some are a bit too little for an average person's appetite (though mine's way above average).

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

In conclusion I would give KAONA Grill a 6 out of 10. If you are from Mandaue and you're looking for a nearby place to hangout and chill then check out KAONA Grill, but if your from Cebu City, you'd probably find it more convenient to go elsewhere.
