21 Jump Street Jumps 20 Years Later

One of my favorite actors in Hollywood is Johnny Depp. He is not only a very convincing character actor but also a very talented musician - a true artist in every sense of the word. Many of you may have first known Johnny as Edward Scissorhands from the movie by director Tim Burton (Tim Burton will come to direct more of Johnny Depp's films) with the same title. But to die-hard fans, they all know that before he was Edward Scissorhands, Johnny Depp was Officer Tom Hanson from the police crime drama TV series 21 Jump Street. 21 Jump Street provided a spark to Johnny Depp's nascent acting career, garnering him national recognition as a teen idol. The show was aired on the Fox Network from April 1987 to April 1991.

Fast forward 20 years later, Columbia Pictures just released a film version of the series starring Jonah Hill (Superbad, Knocked Up) and Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe, Dear John, The Vow). The film follows the same continuity as the TV series, as Deputy Chief Hardy puts it "...we're reviving a canceled undercover police programme from the eighties, and revamping it for modern times.". I've watched the TV show on its latter seasons and though I remember enjoying it, most of the themes of the show during that time was too heavy for a 10 year old me. Nevertheless, after hearing the news of a remake, I still got excited about it though I didn't concoct any expectations from it either. Somehow, knowing that Jonah Hill will star in the film version already gave the idea it being a comedy.

I just finished watching the movie a couple of hours ago (hence the reason for this entry), and I couldn't stop laughing from start to finish. The story is simple and straightforward enough -- pair of underachieving cops, who used to know and hate each other at school, but now as adults cops become friends and partners and are sent undercover as teenagers in high-school to bust a drug ring. It's a different take from the original show's more serious and dramatic approach to the theme. The movie on the other hand provided a perfect blend of chaotic action and vulgar comedy that almost identifies the film as a spoof of the original show rather than a sequel. Nevertheless, the movie has a well written script (screenplay by Jonah Hill himself) as it was smart, silly, cheerfully chaotic, satiric and raunchy all at once.

The movie successfully delivers because of the chemistry and rapport of the two main leads in tandem, Hill and Tatum, both wildly diving into all the mayhem. All in all, 21 Jump Street the movie may come out as a film of total lunacy and crudeness but its outrageously hilarious. And by the way, did I mention that Johnny Depp has a cameo in the movie?
