It's been a couple of weeks since my last entry as it has also been a very busy past weeks for me not to mention a very crappy internet connection.
Anyways, I encountered a post in one of the popular forums in Cebu and it was from a girl who was looking for a "cheap photographer" to take her photos that she wanted to give to her foreigner boyfriend who was coming in the country.
Initially, when I read the title "cheap photographer" I immediately understood where the girl was coming from and what she meant. But the other photographers in the forum started attacking her like she had just insulted them.
One photographer stated, "diko mo shoot ani oi, imong gamit D600 or 6D unya CHEAP photographer? malooy nalang ta" (I'm not gonna shoot this! I'm using a D600 or 6D and I'm being called cheap?). Another one even said to just use a cellphone camera for the shoot. A few on the other hand said it would have been better if she had used the word "affordable" instead of "cheap".
I don't understand where all these hostilities from these so called photographers come from. Why do they take such offense from people looking for affordable rates when they themselves do the same when buying their gears? However though, I do understand that some of these photographers have invested thousands in their gears and that they should be compensated accordingly as well. But then again, not because you have a 5D Mark III or a D600 that you instantly deserve to ask for more. High service rates, just like respect, does not only come from owning expensive gears, but most importantly it needs to be earned through time, experience, results, and most importantly customer satisfaction. Much like a baker with expensive tools but still makes crappy cakes, do you think you still deserve the rate you have now?
Moreover, owning expensive gears does not give you the right to put down inquiring customers who are just looking for something within their means. "If you want more, you have to pay more", that's what most photographers say to justify their rates, but you of all people should know we are all looking for that bang for a buck. If you think otherwise then you are being a hypocrite.
Now, the next time you see someone looking for a cheap photographer and you still think that because you own a D600 people need to bow down at your feet and worship your rates, just ignore it because it's probably not meant for you your highness.
